CD Review
"Slowdown Sundown"
Barrellhouse Chuck
Viola Records
By Norman Darwen
Blues & Rhythm (Issue # 207, 2006

Blues CD Cover Art First things first – it is a sad indictment of the current blues scene that whilst record companies scramble to sign the latest pre-pubescent blues-rock guitarist, Barrelhouse Chuck Goering has to put out this CD on his own label. Musically, this is Chuck’s CD, compiled from a variety of sessions for a number of different labels over the last quarter century, and as solo artist (try the opener for a stunning evocation of Little Brother Montgomery), bandleader, and sideman.

He is a good organist, an excellent singer, and an even better pianist. The likes of Willie Kent, Otis ‘Smokey’ Smothers, Erwin Helfer, the great Billy Flynn, Johnny B. Moore, Calvin Jones, Willie Smith and S.P. Leary are all present here, and the result is a cracking piano blues CD of the kind you thought nobody made any more!
